This New Technology helps keep Seniors Safer at Home During the Coronavirus Crisis

With some Americans being required to stay home, it’s a good time to think about healthy activities at home.

It’s particularly relevant for older people. They face a higher risk from coronavirus and severe repercussions if they suffer a fall, many of which happen at home.

The secret to staying healthy is physical movement, even in times of a public health crisis.

“You have to get moving – there’s no ifs, buts or maybes about it,” says Kevin Duguay, a former professional trainer and physical therapist who is 59. “Lack of mobility leads to a whole host of issues. There are a lot of options that can be done safely in the home for exercise and for fall prevention.”

Seniors worried about falling or physical performance now can get a big boost from a surprising source: socks, yes socks.

By simply wearing a pair of Voxx socks, which have a special Human Performance Technology pattern woven into the fabric, they instantly gain improved balance, performance, reaction time, and pain mitigation. Voxx’s proprietary HPT pattern is also available in insoles and patches The pattern stimulates nerve endings in the peripheral nervous system, and trigger a response in the brain where such physical tasks are managed.

Voxx Vice President Stan Esecson sees the power of Voxx technology every day.

“People try the socks- and instantly, tell me they can’t believe how much better their balance is, how much easier it is getting out of a chair, walking across the room, or doing simple chores,” says Esecson.

Duguay likes the socks so much he joined the company. His mother wears them, too, “After she tried them once she became a believer”.

Now, Duguay says the Voxx socks are additional tools that concerned seniors and their caregivers should employ to prevent falls and encourage physical movement – even at a time when they’re being encouraged to stay home more, now more than ever they need to be active.

Exercise can be done at home. It keeps older people physically strong. It improves balance and stamina and prevents the loss of muscle and bone density. It’s good for mood, mental focus, blood pressure, memory and sleep. It even fights depression and cognitive decline.

In other words, exercise is too important to stop just because you’re stuck in the house and yard.

The National Safety Council recommends simple steps to make homes safer:

Clear floors of clutter, pet gear, cords, throw rugs and other tripping hazards.

Arrange furniture so there’s plenty of room to walk.

Keep essential items where they are easy to reach.

Make sure stairs have railings on both sides, and stairs and hallways have good lighting.

Keep outdoor pathways clear of items, moisture and ice.

Esecson continued, “We’re not trying to change their meds, or change their diet or lifestyle, we’re just trying to change their socks”
