W Locksmith Publishes Analysis That Shows West London Home Burglaries Increase When The Evenings Get Darker

Oct 16, 2026

West London home burglaries run a third higher once the clocks go back, police data shows.

London, England, October 16, 2026 -- With the clocks going back on Sunday 25th October, W Locksmith 0 a local West London locksmith company - analysed two years of Metropolitan Police recorded crime data (From October 2024 to September 2026) to see whether burglaries really rise when the evenings get darker. It discovered that homes were burgled about a third more often from October to March than from April to September.

The company has published a chart that displays this data, which can be viewed below:

Additional key findings from the research revealed that an average of 214 home burglaries happen in West London in the winter, compared to 161 a month in the summer. Burglaries in this area of London also rose from 152 in September 2025 to 257 in January 2026 - an increase of almost 70% in four months.

W Locksmith’s new research shows that December and January were the peak months for burglaries, while June was the quietest in both years. Ealing showed the biggest seasonal swing of all areas surveyed, displaying 71% more burglaries on average in winter. The data shows just 37 burglaries in June 2025, rising to 138 in November of the same year.

Kensington and Chelsea both average 18% higher in winter, with Hammersmith & Fulham remaining at an almost flat rate throughout the year.

Alex, manager of W Locksmith, had this to say:

“We’re the ones fixing doors the morning after a break-in, and every winter we see the same things: houses left dark, doors shut on the latch rather than locked, and old cylinders that can be snapped in seconds. Most of it is easy to fix. Put a lamp on a timer, turn the key when you’re home, and check your front door has an anti-snap lock before the clocks go back.”
