Parents often waffle between the advantages of a private school versus that of a traditional public educational institution. However, according to recent research by the National Center for Education Statistics, students who complete at least the 8th grade or higher in private school, be it Christian Private Schools in Atlanta or any of the surrounding areas, are twice as likely as public school students to complete a bachelor's degree or higher by their mid 20s. To provide what colleges are looking for, private schools are likely to require larger course loads, expect a higher quality of work and require specific projects for graduation such as community service or fine arts participation.
With this in mind, Mount Vernon Presbyterian School (www.mountvernonschool.org) has recently announced that Mount Vernon students currently are performing more than 10,000 hours of community service each year. Further, they're proud of the fact 90% of their students participate in one or more of the school's 45 teams. These types of activities are exactly what college admissions are seeking states the school spokesperson. "All of the big schools want to know what you've done so far. The typical student has very little to tell them, however, that's not the case with our students. Private Schooling in Atlanta prepares students to be better citizens and to interact with adults in a more professional manner."
Community service helps teens and even elementary school students learn how to ask for help from adults and interact with them on regular basis. Whether they're asking for donations or organizing a project, the public speaking skills one learns through community service simply can't be taught in a classroom, says the school spokesperson. "It's not surprising the most common fear among Americans is speaking in public, and we tackle it head on. By participating in community service projects, teens and grade school students talk to groups, including churches, scouts or other community groups. By gaining confidence at an early age, they will be more than capable when it comes time to interview with colleges or for jobs."
