Neighborhood watch programs have been proven to decrease home burglaries, as burglars are unlikely to break into a house if they know it is part of a community watch program.
A collective watch group can be particularly helpful for communities with high crime rates and can be a highly effective way for residents to work together to feel safer and more secure in their homes.
Community watch programs are a cost effective and efficient way to decrease and even eliminate break-ins and thefts. The first step in coordinating a neighborhood watch is to contact residents in the neighborhood to from a group, elect a planner and then communicate with local authorities.
Once the local authorities have been communicated with and are aware of the formation of the watch group, it is up to the people of a neighborhood to be diligent and observant and alert local authorities of any suspicious activity.
When reporting a crime or suspicious activity, it’s important to include as much information as possible such as a description of the suspect(s), where they were, the time of day, which way they went, license plate number if applicable, etc.
Most communities offer training programs on security and theft avoidance. Anyone interested in joining one of these training seminars are advised to contact their local security agency to ask when such training might be available.
